Hiring a Next.js Developer in 2026? What the Data Says Before You Commit

The 2026 numbers

Monthly npm downloads, August 2025 vs August 2026 (npm registry):

Downloads include CI pipelines and AI coding agents, so read them as momentum, not headcount. The direction is clear: React + Next.js + TypeScript is the default stack AI tools and teams reach for.

Is Next.js the right choice for your project?

Yes, if you need:

• Pages that must rank on Google (marketing site, blog, listings, e-commerce)
• A few server features — forms, login, a database — without a separate backend
• Content your team edits without a developer

No, if you need:

• A mostly static site with little interactivity → Astro (fastest-growing in the table above)
• An internal dashboard behind a login → plain React + Vite
• A pure API → a backend framework (see my FastAPI vs Django guide)

What to ask a Next.js developer before hiring

1. "Is this page static, dynamic or revalidated — and why?" Caching is where Next.js projects go wrong.
2. "Where does use client go?" Good answer: small components at the leaves, not whole pages.
3. "How do you handle env config between local and production?" The most common launch-day 500 is a database URL still pointing at localhost.
4. "Is it TypeScript, with strict on?" In 2026 this should be a yes.

2027 outlook (my predictions)

• TypeScript becomes non-negotiable for new client work. At ~3× yearly growth, plain-JS projects will be the exception AI tools handle worst.
• Astro takes more content sites from Next.js. 6.8× growth from a small base points to a real shift for low-interactivity sites.
• Next.js stays the default for "SEO + app" hybrids, because AI coding tools scaffold it by default and that compounds.
• Hiring shifts from "React developer" to "full-stack Next.js + database" — frontend-only roles keep shrinking.
