The 2026 numbers

Core Web Vitals (Chrome UX Report, May 2026)

• 55.9% of origins pass all three Core Web Vitals.
• Mobile: roughly 48–49% pass — fewer than half.
• LCP (loading) is the metric most sites fail.

AI Overviews (field study, Jan–Feb 2026)

• AI Overviews cut outbound organic clicks by 38% on the queries where they appear.
• Zero-click searches rose from 54% to 72%.

Less traffic reaches websites, and more than half of mobile sites give that traffic a slow experience. Passing both tests is now a competitive edge.

Performance checklist (Core Web Vitals)

LCP — load the main content fast

• Hero image uses next/image with priority and correct sizes
• Images served as AVIF/WebP from a CDN (I use Cloudinary with f_auto)
• Pages are static or ISR — not rendered on every request
• Fonts via next/font (self-hosted, no layout shift)

INP — respond to taps quickly

• Minimal "use client"; heavy components lazy-loaded
• Animation libraries loaded only where used

CLS — nothing jumps

• Width/height on every image and embed
• No banners injected above content after load

SEO checklist (Next.js App Router)

• generateMetadata per page: unique title, description, canonical
• Open Graph images at 1200×630
• JSON-LD: BlogPosting, BreadcrumbList, Person for the author
• sitemap.js and robots.js generated from the database
• /admin and /api disallowed in robots
• Revalidate sitemap and pages on publish (revalidatePath)

Surviving AI Overviews

• Answer with data you own. AI summaries repeat generic advice; original numbers and first-hand results get cited and clicked.
• Write for the decision, not the definition. "Which should I hire/choose?" queries still send clicks.
• Short, structured sections. Tables and checklists are what AI systems quote — with your link.
• Build direct traffic. Newsletter, portfolio, social — channels Google can't summarise away.

2027 outlook (my predictions)

• Mobile CWV pass rate crosses 50%, driven by framework defaults (image optimisation, streaming) rather than site owners.
• Zero-click passes 75% on informational queries; blogs without original data lose most search traffic.
• Decision and comparison content outperforms tutorials in organic clicks.
• Structured data matters more, as AI systems use it to choose which sources to cite.
